For sensitive skin, we recommend starting with your toner’s application directions rather than assuming hands or cotton pads are always better. Our pH BALANCE CALMING TONER directions call for shaking the bottle after cleansing, pouring the toner into your palms, and gently patting it into skin until fully absorbed. With this toner, follow that method and pay attention to your skin’s response instead of adding a cotton-pad wiping step.

Does toner need to be wiped on with a cotton pad?
Before reaching for a cotton pad, check the directions on your toner’s bottle or product page. Does the product call for wiping, or for applying it directly with your hands? That distinction is the starting point.
Our pH BALANCE CALMING TONER is applied directly from your palms. Following our directions does not require an additional pass with a cotton pad.
That does not mean hands are gentler or improve absorption compared with cotton pads for every toner. If you use a different toner, let that product’s application instructions guide your choice.
Look at the motion, not just the tool
Using a cotton pad and repeatedly rubbing your skin are not the same thing. In its face-washing guidance, the American Academy of Dermatology advises avoiding scrubbing because it can irritate skin.
That guidance concerns cleansing. It does not establish whether hands or cotton pads are better for applying toner. Applying toner with your hands is not a reason to rub firmly, either. Our toner’s directions specify gentle patting.
Rather than focusing only on which tool you use, consider how you apply the product.
How to apply our pH BALANCE CALMING TONER
Follow our product directions:
- Start with cleansed skin.
- Shake the toner bottle.
- Pour the toner directly into your palms.
- Gently pat it into your skin until fully absorbed.
The aim is gentle application. There is no need to turn this into a wiping routine that continues until a cotton pad comes away clean.
Still feeling dry? Consider the moisturizer that follows
Our toner’s directions call for following with cream balm after absorption. If dryness has you reaching for more layers of toner, consider the moisturizer you use afterward, not only how often you reapply toner.
The American Academy of Dermatology’s dry-skin care guidance recommends using moisturizer when skin is dry and considering a cream or ointment for dry skin.
How many times to apply toner and which moisturizer to use for dryness are separate decisions. More toner does not have to be the focus of your next step.
If skin stings or turns red, do not just switch tools
If your skin reacts after applying toner, do not try to resolve it simply by switching from a cotton pad to your hands and continuing to use the product.
In its guidance on testing skin care products and responding to reactions, the American Academy of Dermatology advises gently washing the product off as soon as possible and not using it again. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe or does not settle. A dermatologist can also help when it is difficult to identify the ingredient responsible.
For your next application of our pH BALANCE CALMING TONER, start with its directions above: shake, pour into your palms, and gently pat. Keep the focus on gentle application rather than extra wiping or repeated layers.
