We compared four Korean barrier cream balms for dry, sensitive skin on three formula-level criteria: lipid makeup (ceramide, cholesterol, fatty acid), fragrance or essential oils, and a silicone-free butter-and-oil occlusive. Across all three, PURE'AM AUTHENTIC BARRIER CREAM BALM ranks first and Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream ranks second with a full lipid trio and no listed fragrance. If silicone isn't a concern for you, lipid makeup alone points to Illiyoon and Aestura first.
This comparison runs on PURE'AM's own blog, and our cream balm is one of the four products in it. So we scored our formula against the same three criteria as everyone else, including where it falls short. Every judgment below comes from each brand's official ingredient list and product page, not from texture preference or sales rank.
The three criteria we used
We scored each cream on three things you can verify yourself from the ingredient list.
- Lipid makeup. Does the formula list a ceramide (including ceramide-like lipids), cholesterol, and a fatty acid? All three present counts as a full match; one or two counts as partial. Ingredient lists don't disclose concentration or ratio, so we didn't estimate either.
- Fragrance or essential oils. We checked for Fragrance (Parfum) and for plant-named oils that function as essential oils, plus what each official page says about fragrance. This is usually the first thing to screen out if you've reacted to scent before.
- Silicone-free butter-and-oil occlusive. We checked whether the formula seals in moisture with shea butter, plant oils, and fatty alcohols rather than a silicone like dimethicone. This isn't a claim that silicone is harmful. It's a preference check for anyone specifically looking for a butter-and-oil balm texture.
Where two products matched on the same number of criteria, we broke the tie by lipid makeup.

1. PURE'AM AUTHENTIC BARRIER CREAM BALM
This formula meets two of the three criteria and partially meets the third. The official ingredient list opens with water, yuzu water, glycerin, and shea butter, followed by jojoba seed oil, sunflower seed oil, ceramide NP, phytosphingosine, multiple hyaluronic acids, and polyglutamic acid (PURE'AM official product page; ingredient list independently listed at Skin Skool Beauty and SkinSAFE). It's named a balm, but it's a water-based formula: humectants hold water in place while the butter and oils handle sealing, each doing a separate job in the same jar. The product page describes the texture as creamy and buttery, and lists it as Fragrance-Free and Silicone Free.
Here's where the same criteria work against us:
- Lipid makeup is narrow. The formula carries one ceramide type (NP) plus phytosphingosine, a ceramide-building block. There's no cholesterol or a free fatty acid like stearic acid on the list, so criterion 1 is only a partial match.
- Several plant extracts are included. Sweet wormwood, neem leaf, centella asiatica, rosemary leaf, green tea, and sea buckthorn fruit extract sit alongside yuzu water and evening primrose oil. If you've reacted to any of these before, patch-test along your jawline first.
- Sweet almond oil is in the formula. If you have a tree nut allergy, check this before use.
The official product page marks certified-organic ingredients with an asterisk and lists CUK organic certification (registration CU856114) alongside a "20% organic / 100% natural" composition (PURE'AM official product page). The asterisks sit on individual ingredients like yuzu water, glycerin, shea butter, and jojoba seed oil, so it's more accurate to read the certification scope ingredient by ingredient rather than as a claim about the whole jar.
Use it after cleansing and toning. Apply to face and neck morning and night, and if you're also using the SUPER GLOW DEW face oil, apply that after the cream balm as the last step. Follow with sunscreen in the morning. Not every step is required for every skin type: toner and oil are optional depending on how your skin feels that day.
2. Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream
The 2025 reformulation meets the lipid and fragrance criteria. Its ingredient list includes a ceramide-like lipid (Cetyl-PG Hydroxyethyl Palmitamide), cholesterol, stearic acid and palmitic acid, and ceramide NP, with no fragrance or essential oil listed (INCIDecoder). Ceramide NP carries a concentration note of 4ppm on that listing, a vanishingly small amount, which suggests the ceramide-like lipid earlier in the list is doing most of the work on lipid makeup.
Dimethicone appears as the formula's fifth ingredient, so it doesn't meet criterion 3. The formula also includes plant ingredients such as ginseng water, plum extract, and rosemary leaf extract. Because this is a reformulated product, check the ingredient list on the jar you actually buy.
3. Aestura Atobarrier365 Cream
This formula meets the lipid criterion, and it's one the brand explains directly. Aestura states that skin lipids consist of ceramide, cholesterol, and fatty acids, and that this cream encapsulates all three for stability (AESTURA official). The official ingredient list confirms a ceramide-like lipid (Hydroxypropyl Bispalmitamide MEA), ceramide NP, cholesterol, and stearic and palmitic acids, with very little plant extract (Skinsort).
We scored the fragrance criterion as a partial match. No fragrance is listed in the ingredients, but the same product page's "additive-free" claim also states the formula contains under 1% synthetic fragrance. If you're especially reactive to fragrance, confirm directly with the brand before buying. It doesn't meet criterion 3: dimethicone sits early in the ingredient list, and the occlusive layer leans on ester oils and squalane, giving it a smoother, more conventional cream feel rather than a butter-forward balm texture.
4. Real Barrier Extreme Cream
This formula only partially matches the lipid criterion. The ingredient list includes a ceramide-like lipid (Myristoyl/Palmitoyl Oxostearamide/Arachamide MEA), phytosterols, phospholipids, and stearic acid, but no cholesterol. The same list carries essential oils, including sage, patchouli, cardamom, peppermint, Roman chamomile, and juniper, along with dimethicone (INCIDecoder).
If you haven't reacted to fragrance ingredients before and want a ceramide-like lipid paired with panthenol, this can be a reasonable option. If scent has triggered redness for you in the past, this is the one to be most cautious about in this comparison.
If silicone isn't a dealbreaker, the order changes
Criterion 3 is a preference, not a safety call. If dimethicone doesn't bother you, the ranking shifts: Illiyoon moves first since it's the only formula meeting both the lipid and fragrance criteria, Aestura follows with a complete lipid trio, then PURE'AM's cream balm, then Real Barrier. If you want a silicone-free, butter-and-oil balm texture with no fragrance, the ranking above stands as is.
| If this matters most to you | Check first |
|---|---|
| Lipid makeup above all, silicone doesn't matter | Illiyoon, Aestura |
| Silicone-free, butter-and-oil balm texture and fragrance-free | PURE'AM cream balm |
| A formula with fewer plant extracts | Aestura |
| You've reacted to fragrance before | Be cautious with Real Barrier Extreme Cream |
Four things to check on your own ingredient list
- Read the ingredient list on the jar you actually have. Formulas change, as Illiyoon's 2025 reformulation shows, so what's printed online may not match what's in your hand.
- Look for Ceramide, Cholesterol, and Stearic Acid (or Palmitic Acid). Counting how many of the three appear gives you a fast read on lipid makeup.
- Look for Fragrance (Parfum) and plant-named oils that function as essential oils. Read the ingredient list alongside the brand's own fragrance disclosure, since the two don't always say the same thing.
- Look for dimethicone or other silicones. This only matters if you're specifically after a silicone-free, butter-and-oil texture.
FAQ
If a product is called a "balm," does that mean it's anhydrous?
Not necessarily. All four products in this comparison, including PURE'AM's cream balm, list water as the first ingredient. The real difference between a cream and a balm shows up in how early the butters and oils appear and whether silicone is standing in for them.
Does more ceramide listed mean a better cream?
Ingredient lists rarely disclose concentration. Unless a brand publishes a specific figure, like Illiyoon's 4ppm note for ceramide NP, it's hard to compare amounts directly. Checking whether a ceramide appears alongside cholesterol and a fatty acid is more useful than counting how many ceramide types are listed.
If redness or itching is severe, is switching creams enough?
If you're dealing with ongoing redness, oozing, or severe itching, see a dermatologist before switching moisturizers. This comparison is meant to help with everyday moisturizer choices for dry, sensitive skin, not to address a flare that needs medical care.
